Buech

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE ABOVE LAKE ZURICH

Far above Lake Zurich…

For more than 100 years, Restaurant Buech has stood high above Herrliberg, shaded by towering beech trees in the midst of an old vineyard. Here, a harmonious landscape, lively people, and culinary delights come together in a truly unique way.

Buech has preserved the charm of an authentic country inn: creaking wooden floors, venerable aged paneling, and wooden tables that have been polished to a shine for generations.

A highlight – the breathtaking view over Lake Zurich, stretching to the gently rolling hills of Hirzel. Beyond them, the majestic peaks of the Glarus and Central Swiss Alps extend all the way to the Jungfraujoch.

Where Art Meets Culinary Delights – The Restaurant Buech as a Total Work of Art

High above Lake Zurich, nature, indulgence, and art merge into a unique experience at Restaurant Buech. Thanks to the generous loans from renowned gallerist and collector Bruno Bischofberger, guests dine in illustrious company – surrounded by original works of world-famous artists such as Warhol, Basquiat, and Gauguin.

The spectacular view over the vineyards and the lake attracts both gourmets and art enthusiasts. But for Bruno Bischofberger, there is a very personal reason to keep coming back: "From up here, I can see the tree in my garden," he says with a smile. Being surrounded by high-caliber artworks while dining is almost second nature to him as a passionate collector.

Bruno Bischofberger – A Life Dedicated to Art

The 83-year-old art dealer Bruno Bischofberger is one of the most influential figures in the international art scene. As a young gallerist, he quickly recognized the potential of American Pop Art and, in 1965, presented artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Robert Rauschenberg in Zurich. His exclusive purchasing rights for Warhol’s works until 1987 made him a key player in the art market – and led to a close friendship with the artist.

Warhol himself was a frequent guest in Switzerland and enjoyed the idyllic setting of Restaurant Buech. The restaurant’s guest books are filled with drawings and dedications from famous artists. One particularly humorous memory comes from Jean-Michel Basquiat: a drawing of a sausage with a fork, now framed in the restaurant – a playful nod to his culinary preferences.

A Museum for Dining

The idea of showcasing art at Restaurant Buech was conceived six years ago, inspired by Zurich’s legendary Kronenhalle. However, the limited space posed a challenge. The selection was narrowed down to small-format works, including Paul Klee’s "Wie die Blume auf dem Feld," a Marilyn portrait by Warhol, and a ceramic piece by Joan Miró.

Swiss art is also particularly close to Bischofberger’s heart. The restaurant’s grand dining room features Appenzeller paintings and works by Adolf Dietrich, an artist he greatly admires. "Nature is the greatest inspiration for art," Bischofberger remarks, gazing over the shimmering Lake Zurich. At Restaurant Buech, art, history, and fine dining blend into a harmonious total work of art – a place where all senses are indulged.
